Integrated technology

EEG measures brainwave activity, revealing what's happening inside the mind like stress, focus, or emotional arousal.

Affective Computing reads external cues: facial expressions, eye movement, voice tone, and micro-expressions. It helps identify specific emotions from how someone looks or sounds.

Human emotions is complex people can hide or miscommunicate emotions. With EEG and Affective computing working together will give the AI a more reliable and accurate way to detect and interpret true emotional states.

How Does an AI Therapeutic Headphone Work?

Indication LED light in warm tone

MoodAura features a sleek touchscreen framed by a carefully designed ambient light.

Beyond adding a modern design touch, the light draws inspiration from light therapy to create the most comfortable environment for users, enhancing calm and focus while they control the device.

EEG:

- rear nodes

- ear-hook built-in

MoodAura features a slim ear-hook design for comfort and freedom of movement. The EEG system is built into the hook and a small piece above the ear near the parietal lobe for better emotion tracking.

It’s lightweight, minimalist, and designed for all-day comfort, blending seamlessly into your lifestyle.

It features a built-in airflow system that adjusts temperature based on your emotional state, gently blowing warm or cool air to help regulate your mood in real time.

Pop-up Camera

As part of its affective computing system, the camera scans the user’s face especially the eyes, and works with voice recognition to better understand user emotions.

Research &

professional insight

It’s been an honor to work with Isma Ahmed, a therapist at Lifelong Medical Care in Oakland, who supports patients dealing with challenges such as drug use, childhood trauma, and more. She earned her bachelor’s degree from USF and her master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy Counseling from Cal State East Bay.

Isma has supported me since the beginning of this project, and I was able to schedule a second meeting with her after developing my prototype and sketches. During that session, she gave me insightful feedback that helped improve and refine the product.

Isma Ahmed

First iterations, Isma brought up about the placement of the EEG sensors. I originally placed them near the frontal lobe, but she recommended moving them further back toward the parietal and somatosensory regions. These areas are more connected to emotional processing, which helped improve the accuracy of the readings.
The second feedback was about affective computing through voice. While it works, she explained that it needs support since people can hold back or lie when they speak. Isma recommended adding more affective computing element like face recognition to improve accuracy, especially focusing on the eyes, which we discovered are the most telling feature when it comes to human emotion.
Third but not least, after establishing a solid foundation, we explored how the AI would process information to predict emotional states. Through both research and testing with random participants and patients, we created a table illustrating how different facial and eye movements correlate with specific emotions, based on studies of human expression and behavior. These visual cues, when combined with internal data such as EEG, enhance the AI’s ability to accurately recognize what someone may be feeling.
